            Abstract :
Waveform design for gigabit local area networks (LANs) is examined. The discussion begins with a survey of the candidate architectures for various gigabit LAN applications. Then the selection of appropriate waveforms and signaling techniques is explored. The issue of register insertion is considered, and the performance of M-ary incoherent amplitude-shift keying (ASK) is discussed, with particular attention to the significant amount of excess signal-to-noise ratio available
