Abstract :
The decentralization based on intelligent field devices allows new structures in factory automation. Modular production lines become possible because the processing of sensor and actor data isn´t carried out by a central controller in a cabinet anymore but with small intelligent units directly in the machine itself. If these modules form a unit from the mechanics, the automation devices and the application program, it is possible to design self-sufficient modules which can be tested in their function and delivered on the plant fully operational by the machine builder. Therefore the time for commissioning can be dramatically decreased. To ensure a smooth interoperability of the individual components, it is necessary to define a superposed object model for the communication between the modules. Profibus International has presented the standard Profinet which defines not only an object model for runtime and engineering of distributed, intelligent systems but also describes a general concept for the use of Industrial Ethernet in factory automation. Besides the electrical installation engineering and the integration of decentralized field devices, the standard specifies the deterministic real-time expansion for Ethernet. The first version of the Profinet standard is already in operation. This paper describes the concept and the future stages of the development of Profinet as well as the implementation in a reference installation and the benefits for the user with this new technology.
