Shanghai faces the challenge of increasing population and limited resources. As the theme of Shanghai Expo 2010 is ldquoBetter City, Better Liferdquo, representing the common wish of the whole humankind for a better living in future urban environments. The research of Shanghai Human Settlement Information Platform meets the new requirement of the times. The platform is based on remote sensing information to investigate and make highly scientific presentation of the environmental elements objectively and provide figures or statistics for assessment of human settlement and operates within the framework of Shanghai Spatial Information Grid. In this paper, the current situation of spatial data infrastructure in Shanghai is introduced, the applications of Shanghai Human Settlement Information Platform are presented to demonstrate it will contribute to the research of human settlement assessment, government´s decision-making, and Shanghai city´s competitiveness enhancement.
