  • Abstract
At the United States Air Force Academy, all electrical engineering majors are required to take a communications systems course and must complete four laboratory experiments. To enhance the understanding of difficult communication concepts, a training device, called an educational communication system (EDUCOMM), was developed. EDUCOMM is a system box within which are many stand-alone signal-processing subsystems. By simply rewiring different subsystems, students build various communications systems such as superheterodyne receivers, synchronous detectors, frequency division multiplexers, and FM demodulators. EDUCOMM can test and demonstrate a variety of communication concepts such as: double-sideband suppressed-carrier (DSB-SC) or DSB-LC AM, synchronous (coherent) detection, envelope detection, the AM superheterodyne receiver, frequency modulation (FM), sampling and aliasing, and the detection of FM signals
