Abstract
Resonant soft switched high power inverter based static VAr compensators (ISVCs) can provide higher switching frequencies than present hard switched ISVCs. This allows a faster transient response so that the ISVC can also be used simultaneously as an active filter to reduce supply harmonics and random flicker caused by arc furnaces. System subsynchronous resonance compensation can be implemented at the same time and precise injected current control will result in faster damping of alternator torsional mode oscillations than is presently possible
