Abstract :
The purpose of this paper is to study, from old and more recent archaelogical discoveries, the traces of a previous occupation of the area that will make up the territory of the ancient city of Mariana, founded by Roman general and consul Caius Marius between 100 and 89 B.C. The state of knowledge on the most anciest origins of the urban site itself still remains quite incomplete. We will however try to propose a certain number of updated hypotheses, from testimonies going back to this archaic period, and the first results of new research.
