Abstract
An expert system for the teaching of English grammar is written for a personal computer user, in the Turbo PROLOG language. It uses a context-free, recursive descent parser to implement its grammar checking facility. This expert system has a learning environment where the teacher is expected to teach the system the types of grammar it is to recognize. It also has expandable databases into which new words that the system is to know can easily be keyed in. In its checking mode, the system has the ability to check text files or individual sentences for grammatical errors. It is also able to create error files into which grammatical errors from the text file and their corresponding messages are stored
