  • Abstract
In this paper we compare the use of two metrics that could be used as indicators of the quality of streamed video in a wireless home network based on 802.11g. One of the metrics is throughput which is a traditional performance metric. The other metric is based on the perceived quality of a video clip. Based on the perceived video quality and throughput results, a comparison study is carried out between the conventional strategy (i.e. throughput) and a new strategy based on perceptual video quality measurements for data rate adaptation. The results demonstrate that the throughput metric underestimates the perceived quality of video meaning that it is not a satisfactory indicator of the quality of video clips.
