Abstract
Performance models for standard Group 3 (G3) and error correction mode (ECM) G3 fax transmission are investigated, and channels over the public switched telephone network (PSTN) are simulated. Transmission times under certain line conditions for the models are then compared and analyzed. The channel noise over PSTN was investigated. The transmission times at different error rates for the respective models are plotted. Samples of this curve have been verified with experiments. The bit error rate for an acceptable image quality on a predefined distortion vector is derived and used as the fallback rate for 9600 bps in STD mode
