Abstract
This paper presents the details of extensive computer simulations of a sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) based Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) using Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). With the advancement of high-power electronic devices and the relevant control technology, the improvements of fast response of FACTS devices are now available. For a better understanding of the operating principles and the control characteristics of a UPFC concerning the relationships between its control variables and the controlled real and reactive power flows, particularly in a transient state, this paper studies all the possible operations of a UPFC system. The studies are carried out mainly by investigating a SPWM based UPFC working on a simplified power system. The EMTP simulation results reconfirm that UPFC has several advantages in its operational performance in the matter of both the steady state power flow regulation and the transient stability control
