Abstract :
The fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) is an emerging American National Standard Institute (ANSI) token-ring local area network using fiber-optic links as the transmission medium. A description is provided of the link error monitor (LEM), a function of FDDI station management (SMT) which provides continuous monitoring of FDDI link error rates. The evolution of the LEM is briefly traced. An example implementation of the mechanisms and policies associated with FDDI physical link error-rate monitoring is presented
