Abstract :
Distributed computer control systems (DCS) are characterized by a closed local connection between the control instrumentation and the technological plant. However, future scenarios require DCS to offer location-based and context-sensitive services to guarantee suitable local and remote functions for different user needs. DCSs are also required to transmit data in real-time and should also consider safety and security aspects. These requirements are met by the virtual automation network (VAN), a heterogeneous network consisting of wired and wireless local area network, the Internet, and wired or/and wireless telecommunications systems. Various real-time requirements within a VAN have to be investigated differing from the requirements of the office applications and limiting the use of a heterogeneous network for the transmission of real-time data. The investigation has to be directed to the WAN switching mechanism. The guidelines for the design of a TCP/IP-oriented safety layer are given.
