Abstract :
On-Board Processing (OBP) technology has been already in the satellite scene for almost two decades. It has been a difficult path and for a long time considered an added but expensive value brought to the satellite payload. Today, it is a commercial and competitive reality. In the case of Thales Alenia Space (TAS), a new generation of OBP solutions are available to satisfy the always more demanding needs of satellite communications. The AmerHis generation OBP satellite systems represent a full family of next generation satellite global IP services solution, with more capacity, more flexibility and quick adaptation to market changes. This paper provides an overview of the processed transponders concept and classification of OBP types, the benefits and tradeoffs of OBP based satellite systems are analyzed. All this, to help the introduction of Thales Alenia Space OBP based satellite systems solutions. Special interest is given to AmerHis generation satellite systems, covering its main benefits, market advantages, its present status and future evolutions.
