  • Abstract
It is argued that the biggest impact of new technology on future military communications cannot be achieved by making incremental improvements in existing communication systems. The revolutionary capabilities that current technology could make available will require an adjustment on the part of the users, acquirers, and developers alike. The need for a method to develop operational prototypes that users can fully assess prior to acquisition is seen as critical to the timely insertion of technology. An example of how available technology could revolutionize a venerable method of communications is outlined to illustrate the benefits to be gained. Specifically, the example of wide bandwidth HF spread spectrum has been explicitly outlined to illustrate the role technology is ready to play in the future of military communications
