Abstract :
The basic principle of a new shunt, denoted “flat strap sandwich current shunt”, (FSSCS) which consists of a very thin flat strap resistor in the sandwich configuration, namely with many superimposed layers is illustrated. With such a configuration the distribution of the current density on the strap´s section is evaluated to approach the one of a theoretical isolated strap. Test results on a prototype of the FSSCS show that its response time may be at least the same one of the coaxial shunts. The use of the FSSCS for measuring high impulse and heavy surge currents, and continuous complex currents and in thermal current converters is also illustrated
