Abstract :
The purpose of the paper is development of generic visualization methods (GVMs) inside a periodic table of GVMs (PTGVMs) by examining a particular case of ER diagrams. Work is based on a concept of the three-layer architecture for an information visualization system including: (1) a PTGVMs; (2) middleware, translating visualizations into ADTs, classes in terms of OOP, and (3) a graphic package, realizing visualization physically. ER diagrams were classified as a graph ADT visualization type. Classes representing nodes were designed and implemented, programs to draw ER diagrams were developed, and a set of exemplary ER diagrams was generated. Signature for this particular representative visualization was defined using parameters which characterize complexity of visualizations standing for groups, and complexity of content area standing for periods. Fragments of implementation code are given. Paper puts ER diagrams with their GVMs into proper box in the PTGVMs, provides grounds and factual material for development of GVMs, demonstrates concrete techniques for their realization, gives directions for further development.
