Abstract :
Summary Form only given, as follows. Intense, short-pulse lasers that can be focused to irradiances exceeding 10/sup 20/ W/cm/sup 2/ are becoming readily available. Laser-matter interactions at these intensities generate intense, short X-ray pulses in the kiloelectronvolt photon energy range with radiances of a few 10/sup 16/ W/cm/sup 2/. Schemes that use these X-ray pulses to pump inner and outer shell laboratory X-ray lasers are nearer to reality. The author has calculated the threshold X-ray pump irradiance that is required to cause steady-state inversion in the L-M manifold for materials with 11>
