Abstract :
Summary Form only given, as follows. The PADE analyzer can measure the pitch angle of electrons or ions with respect to the magnetic field in a magnetized plasma. This novel device is formed by two directional energy analyzers, mutually perpendicular to one another and each 4 mm in diameter. The analyzers are very close to each other, allowing properties such as average kinetic energy perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field to be measured at the same point in the plasma region. From these data, the pitch angle can be determined. The PADE was designed, built, and tested in the M4X, a machine that can operate like a mirror as well as a cusp.<>
