Abstract :
A novel unslotted ALOHA channel-access algorithm, the moment-of-silence algorithm, is designed for multihop, receiver-directed, spread-spectrum packet-radio networks. This algorithm increases network throughput by providing a more reliable mechanism of acknowledging data packets at the link level. The author determines how to schedule acknowledgment transmissions higher priority than data transmissions forcing nodes to listen for an acknowledgment for a short time after each data packet transmission significantly increases throughput when compared with sending acknowledgment packets and data packets at equal priority. The author evaluates the performance of the moment-of-silence algorithm with a new mathematical model that relates offered load to carried load in a neighborhood of a packet radio
