Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. We summarize the results of a research program to determine the effects of magnetic and tube tapering on the microwave power, pulselength, energy, and frequency spectrum of an intense e-beam gyrotron-backward-wave-oscillator. The electron beam driver is the Michigan Electron Long Beam Accelerator (MELBA) at parameters: V=-0.7 to -0.8 MV, I/sub diode/=1-10 kA, I/sub tube/=1-4 kA, and /spl tau//sub e-beam/=0.4-1 /spl mu/s. Tapering trim coils and interaction regions have been constructed to concentrate experimental efforts within a parameter space of -15%\n\n\t\t
