Abstract
Summary form only given as follows. The first part of this paper presents a novel design of a simple high resolution positioning mechanism for a rotor. The positioning mechanism is driven by bimorph piezoelectric actuators. Fine-positionings in a limited workspace are possible by smooth exciting of the bimorph actuators. Unlimited rotation of the rotor is achieved by the utilization of friction between rotor and bearing and the moment of inertia of the rotor caused by rapid deformation of the actuators. The rotor is statically determinate supported in order to guarantee an exact axis of rotation. Finally theoretical and experimental investigations have been done to characterize the static and the dynamic behavior of the positioning.
