Abstract :
The use of local area networks (LANs) for plant automation is discussed. Consideration is given to the use of communication networks as integration tools, LAN services, network types, the solution of the integration problem, the Open System Interconnection model, the IEEE 802 project, upper-layer standards, the MAP (manufacturing automation protocol) support of more than one network type. process control influence on MAP, and standard and proprietary LANs
