Abstract :
Two major renovations at the Heartland Cement Company in Independence, Kansas are described. First, the coal grinding system was converted to indirect-field, with new instrumentation to make the system more dependable and efficient. Second, the raw meal grinding and drying system, which consisted of a large array of outdated inefficient equipment, was completely replaced by a single vertical roller mill to reduce maintenance and power consumption, while improving product quality. Benefits of the coal mill modernization include better coal grinding, drying, and firing control, with a 10% decrease in fuel consumption. The new system has dramatically reduced labor, electrical, and fuel costs, while enhancing burnability and allowing the kilns to produce a higher-quality clinker
