Abstract :
Journal publishing in science, technology, and medicine has become too costly for the educational community to support. Commercial publishers intent on maximizing profits through aggressive pricing strategies, consolidation, and protection of intellectual property, are threatening the educational community´s long term access to research and scholarship. As one strategy in counteracting these trends, the Association of Research Libraries has initiated a project intended to support alternatives in the journals marketplace. SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, seeks to partner with other educational and research organizations to stimulate additional prestigious and affordable outlets for the best faculty work
