Abstract :
An ultrasonic camera is being developed consisting of multiple transmitters, an acoustic lens and a distributed receiver. The camera uses 1 MHz ultrasonic beams to produce both intensity and range images of the objects being viewed. Techniques are described for multiple object detection and an estimation of object size and shape. A practical implementation of the technique is given and experimental results obtained in a laboratory tank are reported. Preliminary results have been presented. The system will be used as an ultrasonic 3-D camera for an underwater remotely operated vehicles for the purpose of obstacle avoidance, guidance and position control
