Abstract :
Two models are presented for integrating workstations and a vector processor on a local area network. A compute server which consists of a dedicated workstation with a link to the vector processor is used to provide the vector processor service. Implementations are developed for each model and are tested using alternative transport protocols, namely TCP (transport control protocol) and UDP (user datagram protocol). Experimental results indicate that the vector processor service suffers negligible degradation due to the network communication overhead in comparison to stand-alone operation. A model based on remote execution is slightly faster than a model based on remote procedure call due to less communication overhead
