  • Abstract
    Describes a three dimensional reconstruction algorithm that utilizes both interpolation and extrapolation techniques to reconstruct an object from parallel planar cross sectional data sets encoded via quadtree data structures. This algorithm has been validated by comparing the volume and shape of the original object against the volume and shape of the reconstructed object. The results (volume and shape) are presented for objects of known geometrical shapes reconstructed using this algorithm. Further, results are presented for small and large wax models with shapes that are found in prostatic carcinoma. Finally, the authors present the results obtained from this algorithm by reconstructing real prostate glands using histologic maps obtained from whole-mount sections
