Abstract :
Typical medium voltage distribution systems have developed slowly over many years and essentially comprise of circuit breakers at primary substations feeding a series of isolatable step down transformers. Customers have been demanding better continuity of supply and performance from the network and utilities have been investigating ways of responding without the need for large capital investment. Improvements in switching devices, protection relays and telecontrol in recent years have made the implementation of distribution automation schemes cost effective and the benefits are being realised through a number of installations. This paper explores the benefits of distribution automation, details the equipment required and raises a number of issues relating to a real installation
