Abstract :
The increase of the penetration of the stochastic renewable generation required new strategies by the power system operation. On the one hand the transmission capacity of the power system must by reserved for the unplanned green energy transients which occur sometimes for a long distance and requires operational coordination between different TSO. On the other hand some new indicators for the power system stability should be developed and tested which allow predicting "the dynamic condition" of the power system. Those indicators must be calculated continuous -parallel to the power system operation taking into account the information coming from SCADA or newSCADA. Important are also new protection schemes, concepts and wide area monitoring systems, which must be introduced to the current power system operation practice. Some power utilities have already implemented new strategies for the power system operations taking into account the new operation condition. The general trend is to develop a dynamic protection and security assessment system which can help the power system operator in detecting critical system contingencies and in taking adequate measures to keep the power system in a safe and stable state. Future wide area protection and control systems combined with predicting dynamic network and protection security assessment are able to prevent blackouts in a wide operating range of the power systems and allow to operate them closer to their limits.
