Abstract :
Distance relaying scheme, in the power transmission systems, is susceptible to mal-operation under various system conditions. One of the major problems faced in the operation of distance relays is to distinguish between a symmetrical fault and a power swing. Also, fast and reliable detection of symmetrical faults, occurring during power swing blocking, poses another challenge. This paper introduces a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based power swing identification scheme, which, along with the conventional impedance measuring unit, is able to detect and discriminate power swings from symmetrical faults occurring in the system. The proposed scheme has been tested on WSCC 9-bus system and its performance has been compared with an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS) based power swing blocking scheme.
