This paper addresses issues faced and strategies adopted for the implementation of an optical fibre communications link and the interfacing of a replacement for an existing 330 kV line protection in the Snowy Mountains scheme, South Eastern Australia. The paper discusses: the communications upgrade and protection options; formulation of a combined protection/control philosophy; combined protection/communications functional specification; application of the protection; and commissioning tests
