Abstract :
This paper presents our recent experience in quality evaluation of stator coils and bars during thermal cycling (TC) tests using several diagnostic tools. Diagnostic tests, such as tap tests, dissipation factor tests, partial discharge tests, and capacitance measurements were conducted to evaluate the insulation condition during and after thermal cycling testing. Thermal cycling tests accompanied with the diagnostic tests can help to identify defects in the quality and performance of coils/bars. Bars/coils which can pass a VE test may have severe delamination and defects during a TC test. Since there are no pass/fall criteria for TC testing in the current IEEE Std 1310-1996, voltage endurance (VE) testing following TC testing has been proposed as an alternative pass/fail criterion for quality evaluation of stator coils/bars
