Abstract :
In this paper, we investigate the mechanism of the false detection of motion vectors for image including spatial periodic patterns. Using a motion estimation model, we conclude that block matching distortion caused by motion vector sampling error (DVSE) degrades the motion estimation reliability. Based on the theoretical conclusion, we propose a new motion estimation algorithm. In the new algorithm, we define a maximum value of DVSE (maxDVSE) for each block, and all candidate vectors which give less block matching distortion than maxDVSE are stored for each block. Accurate (reliable) vectors are selected from the candidate vectors by finding ´anchor vectors´ which are vectors at unique point of spatial periodic patterns. To confirm the performance of the proposed algorithm, we carried out simulations with several video sequences. The simulation results show that precision of proposed motion estimation algorithm is over 98% which are superior to full search algorithm.
