Abstract :
A new concept of employing hybrid dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) excited by a quarter wave monopole has recently been proposed and examined by a group of researchers. An ultra wide impedance bandwidth (3:1) with monopole-like radiation patterns was achieved theoretically and experimentally. In this paper, we have addressed the same structure aiming to developing a better physical insight into its ultra wideband performance. A thorough study of the resonant modes and the input impedance behaviour in this hybrid antenna structure has been presented using simulated data and electrical parameters like electric current and field distributions and those have been analyzed to understand the physics behind the phenomena. This study ultimately leads to developing a comprehensive design guideline for further investigations and practical applications in different microwave bands.
