Abstract
Applications of multimedia distributed database systems and their characteristics are discussed. These applications provide a user with various information services and are based on communication capabilities offered by the broadband (as well as narrowband) ISDN technologies. The requirements to be supported by multimedia distributed database management systems are identified. On the basis of these findings, capabilities of multimedia distributed database management systems are identified and an architecture for the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) application layer for these systems is presented. Some technological challenges in the development of these systems are discussed
