Abstract
The use of transient waveforms in tests of protection systems is becoming more widespread as economical and easy to use tools become more available to the utility protection engineer. The paper describes the use of COMTRADE records from Digital Fault Recording devices (DFR) and electro-magnetic transient programs (EMTP) in tests on protection relays, and discusses considerations such as selection of records, sampling rates, amplifier ratings
