Abstract :
A multi-level CPM system can be broken down into a linear continuous-phase encoder and a memoryless modulator, which reduces the system to an easily analyzable form. In this paper, the work presented by Rimoldi is used to develop an encoder for 4-level CPFSK with modulation index 1/4 in order to satisfy the data throughput requirements of LEO satellite links. The waveforms produced by the modulator are illustrated and the power spectral density for the scheme is derived. A simplified demodulator is less expensive than a Viterbi decoder, and is therefore suitable for low cost applications
