Abstract :
Smart Grid (SG) concepts can achieve the required level of electricity supply security and other added benefits, while investing less in traditional electricity infrastructure. One main advantage of SG is promoting Renewable Energy Resources (RES) implementation by smoothly integrating them into the countries´ main grids. The paper proposes steps to mitigate the major SG and RE infrastructure investment challenges through developing their associated regulatory aspects. These steps facilitate the transformation from traditional grids to SGs by integrating a large amount of RE into the grid. Lessons learned from the international experience in this respect are addressed. The accomplished and the proposed regulatory steps to be considered to integrate RE projects into any electricity grid in general and for the Egyptian grid in particular (as an example of developing countries) are explored and evaluated. Finally, further steps are concluded and recommended to governmental and regulatory agency to establish workable regulatory aspects for SG concepts implementation.
