  • Abstract
Transportation system is considered the second largest source of carbon emissions after power generation, and electric vehicles can play an important role towards low-carbon economy by reducing such associated carbon emissions. However, EVs can pose a big challenge for the power grid and its reliability if the charging activity is not properly managed. Integration of EVs into the grid and management of the charging activity in such a way to protect the reliability of the power system is at the heart of smart grid technologies. Mass deployment of EVs into the society requires vision, planning, government support, technology, public awareness, and assessment of the power grid. In this paper, we address the importance of EVs for sustainable growth, and discuss the factors that impact mass deployment of EVs. We also present a `smart solution´ that facilitates the integration process of EVs into the power grid.
