Abstract :
The Thermal Step method elaborated by A. Toureille at the Laboratoire d´Electrotechnique de Montpellier is based on the measurement of thermodilatation current due to the application of a thermal step, to one side of the sample. The deconvolution of this current gives the repartition of electrical field and space charges inside the insulator. This method has been used for the first time to study repartition of polarization and space charge in polar material such as PMMA (polymethyl-methacrylate). Coupling this technique with Thermally Stimulated Discharge Current method (TSDC), it is possible to see minority carriers which could be masked by majority carriers. It allowed us to reveal injection, which was not visible when only the thermal step method was used, because it was masked by important polarization
