Abstract :
Since 1983 Sandia National Laboratories has been developing two electron beam ion sources (EBISs), principally for experiments in atomic physics. One, a relatively low-performance device with a warm bore air-core solenoid, has been used for machine development and preliminary experiments using ions up to Xe+38. This machine has completed its program and is now decommissioned. The other EBIS is a state-of-the-art device with a superconducting magnet. It has the capability of producing ions up to U+82. This machine is in its final stages of construction and should be producing ions in mid-1989
