Abstract
Coherent detection schemes encounter formidable implementation challenges such as stringent synchronization and channel estimation, and ultra-fast analog to digital converters (ADC) in impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) communications. On the other hand, non-coherent receivers were proposed to trade off the detection performance for reduced complexity. In this paper, we propose a new noncoherent demodulation scheme based on energy detection. The scheme effectively alleviate the noise and interference without sacrificing the energy efficiency. To increase the data rate, we propose to use block-coded modulation. Performance evaluation shows that our non-coherent demodulation scheme, in combination with block-coded modulation, provides robust performance even in the presence of strong inter-frame interference and multi-user interference.
