  • Abstract
The rapid growth of vehicular traffic in many countries around the world has caused chronic congestion of traffic networks in many cities. To manage traffic networks more effectively intelligent transport systems (ITS) are required, but these systems require a communication infrastructure to operate. The availability of communication infrastructure is often a problem, especially in third world countries. The work presented in this paper looks at how ad hoc wireless networks can contribute towards such infrastructure. Using components from existing routing protocols, an efficient tree-based ad hoc routing protocol is developed. It is also shown how this protocol can be optimised for use in a large communication network, as would be required by ITS systems.
