Abstract :
This study is carried out to realize the design procedure, analysis and performance verification of in-runner and out-runner permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) with radial magnetic flux for low speed wind turbine systems. Primarily, the mechanical models used in the design procedure of the PMSG are presented. The basic parameters of the generators are calculated respectively and the generators are designed. And then, a coupled transient electromagnetic procedure using finite element method and the design and simulation principles are applied primarily to the prototype models. The derived simulation data from both models are compared and the results are discussed. For all investigated power scales, it is possible to get higher output power and torque by applying the internal rotor configuration for the same permanent magnet (PM) geometry and characteristic. Besides, the external rotor PM configuration is superior to the internal rotor PM configuration and has lower total weight and cost as well.
