Abstract
Digital radiographic images acquired using an image-intensifier-TV system suffer from contrast degradation because of scattered radiation from the patient and veiling glare in the detector system. These perturbations must be corrected before accurate quantitative information can be derived from the images. The authors theoretically derived an approximation for the X-ray scatter and veiling glare in a digital image. They developed a method to estimate it by convolving the detected image and multiplying it by spatially varying weighting factors. This technique was implemented on a humanoid chest phantom and provided a close estimate of scatter/glare in all portions of the image
