Abstract :
The orphan detection and elimination issue has been addressed extensively in the distributed transaction management context and more recently in the distributed systems context with the remote procedure call (RPC) framework. The investigation is extended to a general distributed object-oriented application environment. Orphan objects in a distributed object-oriented application environment correspond to activities which continue to execute on behalf of aborted transactions in a distributed transaction system. A simple and a general model for detecting and eliminating orphans in a distributed object-oriented application environment is considered. A simple example is presented to illustrate how the model would work in a distributed Unix/C+ + application environment
