Increase of signal-to-noise ratio in fiber-optic systems with avalanche photodiode

Abstract :
Most frequently used radiation wavelengths in systems on a basis singlemode optical fiber (SMOF) are lambda=1,3 mum and lambda=1,55 mum appropriate minimal dispersion and the minimal radiation power losses, accordingly. The given range of wavelengths cover, in particular, germanium avalanche photodiodes (APD). First, the use of APD is caused by use of the optical fiber in the length up to several tens kilometres. It is possible to refuse the application of the amplifier on output of the photoreceiver, excluding thus one of the basic sources of the noise; secondly, the use APD results in the increase of the signal-to-noise ratio in the range at the room temperatures approximately to 10 dB in comparison with photoreceivers without internal amplification
