Abstract :
The specification and introduction of broadband technologies in local and wide area networks allow the development of novel applications and services. The analysis of these advanced applications and services results in a set of requirements for the transport-oriented functions in the reference model for advanced applications. A transport service derived from these requirements is defined for those applications and categorized into transport service types. A novel protocol reference model (PRM) for broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) transport services, based on the CCITT-PRM, is proposed. A protocol stack for signaling is introduced and analyzed. The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) adaptation layer (AAL) in the PRM influencing mostly the transport-oriented functions is discussed in detail and transport-oriented protocol stacks are proposed. A brief description of the BERKOM pilot project for B-ISDN is given
