Abstract :
The overall performance of a distributed system is severely influenced by the performance of its communication subsystem. The authors report on an effort to analyze the performance of a communication subsystem prototype for broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDNs) that was developed at the IBM European Network Center. Both modeling and measurement techniques are applied for performance evaluation. The measurement results give some interesting hints concerning the adapter interface architecture and the buffer management within the communication subsystem. A survey of the integrated application of monitoring and modeling techniques to performance evaluation is included
