Abstract
Axial-flux permanent magnet machines with slotted windings exhibit a significant cogging torque due to the magnetic anisotropy of the stator. The same produces a harmonic content in machine back EMF. The paper introduces and discusses a simple and powerful FEM algorithm that gives a numerical evaluation of both cogging torque and back EMF. Parametric analysis leads to a machine design that most meets the requirements for low cogging torque and limited higher harmonic content in back EMF.
